This Sunday, Atletico Madrid faced Villarreal for the 25th matchweek of the Spanish League at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. It was a sensational game from start to finish and the fans witnessed four goals. Atleti came back from 1-0 down to win 3-1. Paco Alcacer scored for the Yellow Submarine, as Angel Correa, Koke, and Joao Felix scored for the hosts.
Diego Simeone couldn’t stay in the sidelines, as he got sent off in the last match. So, his assistant, Burgos, was the one to command the team at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The clash started off with both sides exchanging a lot of passes, in an attempt to infiltrate into the area. On 15 minutes, the visitors surprised and opened the scoring. In a first-time effort, Paco Alcacer was the one to put the Yellow Submariners ahead away. 0-1.
After the goal conceded, Atleti got a taste of their own medicine, as Villarreal went all defense. However, they found a way to break into Villarreal’s area, and equalized the match through Correa, on 40 minutes.
Villarreal came back better from half-time and imposed themselves in the first minutes of the second half. Burgos made a double change in Atleti and introduced both Joao Felix, and Kieran Trippier, and it had a decisive impact in the match.
On 64 minutes, Correa whipped a cross for Koke, who headed home to turn it around for the Colchoneros. Subsequently, substitute Joao Felix took advantage of Villarreal’s defense’s mistake and slotted home in a shot through the goalkeeper’s legs. 3-1 Atleti.
The hosts were not as pragmatic as they are used to be when Simeone is at the sidelines, and it was good for Atleti. If they had this type of attitude under normal circumstances, they could be in a better position in the table right now.
With the victory, Atletico Madrid took 3rd place in La Liga with 43 points and will face Espanyol for the 26th matchday. The match will take place next Sunday, at the Cornella-El Prat Stadium. On the other hand, Villarreal, 7th place with 38 points, will duel against Athletic Bilbao on the same day at Sam Mames Stadium.
