Borussia Dortmund tried but wasn’t able to defeat Werder Bremen for the round of 16 of the German Cup. At the Weser Stadium, Florian Kohfeldt’s men surprised the Yellow and Black side and won by 3-2, getting the qualification for the next round on the night they celebrated their anniversary.
The goals of the home side were scored by Davie Selke, Leonardo Bittencourt, and Milot Rashica. Youngsters Erling Haaland and Giovanni Reyna scored for the visitors.
Before the match began, there were already critics for BVB’s manager, Lucien Favre. All because he left the young star Haaland – once again – on the bench, and also made some changes that honestly didn’t make sense. Of course, that cost a lot in the end.
The first good chance of the match was for the visitors, as Marco Reus saw the ball passing right in front of him but wasn’t able to tap it to the net.
After that, the home side dominated and at the 15th minute, they broke the deadlock. After Rashica’s shot, goalkeeper Marwin Hitz gave a rebound straight to Selke, who just had to put the ball in the back of the net.
Dortmund tried to focus and create chances, but it was truly difficult. They had another good chance when Mats Hummels sent a half-volley, in which keeper Jiri Pavlenka made a good save.
At the 30th minute, Bremen doubled the scoring with an amazing shot from Leo Bittencourt. It was one of the goals that you score maybe once in a lifetime, truly beautiful.
2-0 down at half-time, it was obvious that the guy who scored 7 goals in 3 matches had to play, and Favre thought so too. Haaland came in the place of Hazard, who had a terrible night.
Bremen lost a little offensive power when their striker left because of an injury at the beginning of the second half. With that, Dortmund was able to create more and the Norwegian star appeared to give hope, scoring at the 67th minute. But the happiness didn’t last long.
3 minutes later, Rashica scored the third for the home side, making it even more difficult for the visitors. However, the Yellow and Black didn’t give up. At the 78th minute, the American player, Reyna, made a nice individual play and shot from outside the box. Another amazing goal for the night and a lot of personality for a 17-year-old boy.
Haaland still had a chance in a header, but Pavlenka secured the victory for Werder Bremen. They will now wait for the draw to see who they will face in the next round of the German Cup.
