At the PreZero Arena, Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg played an exciting game for matchday 22 of the Bundesliga. In a match with 3 penalties, the visitors were able to get a 3-2 victory and guarantee the 3 points. Christoph Baumgartner and Andrej Kramaric scored for the visitors, while Wout Weghorst scored a hat-trick for the Wolves.
The first half started disputed, and soon there were already yellow cards being shown. At the 17th minute, the referee awarded the visitors a penalty, because of a handball from Sebastian Rudy after Schlager’s shot. Weghorst stepped up and converted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper to the wrong away and starting his show.
The number 9 still scored another goal in the first half, however, VAR ruled it out because of an offside position of Admir Mehmedi.
5 minutes after the almost second goal, at the 45th minute, Hoffenheim was able to get the equalizer. Kramaric sent a cross into the box and Baumgartner was there to head from very close range to the top right corner.
In the second half, things didn’t change that much. The Wolves kept on putting pressure and got ahead on the scoring again, at the 52nd minute. After Benjamin Hubner brought Kevin Mbabu down inside the box, Weghorst stepped up once more and sent a right-footed shot to the center of the goal.
Once again the hosts were able to equalize things when, at the 60th minute, they were awarded a penalty. The visitors’ hero didn’t go well inside his own box and put the hand on the ball. With that, Kramaric stepped up and put it in the left corner, past goalkeeper Koen Casteels.
But it was truly the night of the Wolves, and of Weghorst. 11 minutes later, Arnold started a great counter and rolled the ball to the number 9 shot it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
With the 3-2 victory, Wolfsburg goes to the 9th position, with 31 points. Hoffenheim dropped to the 8th position, with 33 points. The Wolves now focus on Europa League, where they will welcome Malmo on Thursday. Hoffenheim, only playing the national championship, will prepare for their clash against Monchengladbach, on Saturday, away from home.
