Manchester United ended a seven-year fast in the Premier League. On Monday, coach Ole Solskjaer’s team overcame Chelsea 2-0 at the Stamford Bridge in London and won as visitors. The Red Devils couldn’t beat the Blues at Stamford Bridge in the competition since October 2012. The goals were scored by Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire.
However, Man United’s win had some controversy on it. Harry Maguire should have seen a straight red for aggression before he scored his header, and Chelsea had one goal incorrectly ruled out by the VAR, and yet another one, which was very debatable.
It’s always worth remembering that the Red Devils are the team who’s got more decisions from the VAR, and also the ones who had the more penalties awarded for in this season in the Premier League.
The first half of the derby was balanced. Chelsea suffered a loss right at the 10th minute. Kante was injured and Mason Mount came in his place. That didn’t change things and the hosts created good chances but weren’t able to score. United, on the other hand, took a while to get their first good chance but were the ones to break the deadlock.
At the 44th minute, Wan-Bissaka got the ball on the right and crossed perfectly for Martial, who used his head to send it past goalkeeper Willy Caballero.
At the beginning of the second half, Chelsea were able to equalize the match, however, the referee ruled it out after VAR indicated that there was a foul from Azpilicueta in the play.
Manchester took advantage of the moment and doubled the scoring at the 55th minute. Portuguese Bruno Fernandes curled the ball into the box and Maguire was faster than Antonio Rudiger to head it to the goal, with no chances for Caballero.
Chelsea still had another goal ruled out, this time by Olivier Giroud. After a cross from Mount, the French striker was in an offside position when he scored.
With the result, Manchester United is in 7th place, with 38 points, which is three behind Chelsea, the fourth place and the first team to qualify for UEFA Champions League’s group stage.
After this good victory away, the Red Devils prepare to face Club Brugge, away from home, for the first leg of Europa League’s round of 32, on Thursday. Chelsea will play their Champions League match only next week, then, they will welcome Tottenham on Saturday, for the Premier League.
