Eredivisie leaders Ajax visited Groningen and ended up defeated 2-1 away. The home team scored two goals, one in each half, through Sierhuis and Lundqvist. Donny van de Beek scored the only goal of the visitors, but it was not enough.
Visitors Ajax initiated the game as the better team but were surprised at the quarter-hour mark.
After 16 minutes of the game, Django Warmerdam sent a nice ball to Kaj Sierhuis. The striker ran after it and ended up being alone in front of Varela to open the scoring.
The goal clearly shook Ten Hag’s men mentally. They were still attacking and having the ball, however, none of the timid plays ended up threatening the home team goal.
In the second half, another brilliant play served Groningen to double the lead at home. This time, it was through Ramon Pascal Lundqvist. After a great play between Schreck and Asoro, the number 10 shot it past the goalkeeper Bruno Varela and into the net. 2-0 Groningen.
After that, Ajax started to press more, seeking at least a consolation goal.
It came in the 72nd minute, as the visitors diminished through Donny van de Beek. However, it was not enough and they couldn’t prevent the 2-1 defeat.
With this result, the Dutch League is getting more and more interesting. Ajax is still top the league, with 47 points. However, the difference to the second place AZ is only 3 points as they won their match away against Heerenveen by 2-1.
Complicating things even more to the leaders, on their next match they will welcome their rivals PSV Eindhoven. Even though the match is at the Johan Cruyff Arena, it will be pretty difficult.
Groningen, on the other hand, couldn’t ask for a better result. They are now in the 8th position, with 29 points, just 4 points away from getting a place on next year’s Europa League’s playoffs. For their next match, they will visit PEC Zwolle, on Saturday.
