Chelsea has been playing an improved brand of football this season under Maurizio Sarri. The Blues became the first team to defeat Manchester City in the League earlier on in December. It will be a tough task to expect Sarri to deliver the Premier League title during his first season at Stamford Bridge but it will be a realistic target to expect the Italian to return the club to the Champions League next season. Below are three players who are seemingly surplus to requirements at Chelsea and who the club should consider selling in January in order to raise funds.
- Danny Drinkwater
Drinkwater was one of the worst signings that Chelsea have made during recent years. The 28-year-old arrived at the club during the summer of 2017 from Leicester City. Many would have expected that Drinkwater would have combined well with N’Golo Kante after the duo played a key role in guiding the Foxes to the Premier League title during the 2015-16 season.
Drinkwater has yet to play a minute of Premier League football this season which surely indicates that he is not part of Sarri’s vision. He must be sold next month.
2. Victor Moses
Moses has always struggled with consistency and lacks in terms of his reading of the game as he tends to shoot erratically and waste possession. Moses did manage to establish himself as a first-team regular during the 2016-17 season as Chelsea went on to win the Premier League but things have gone pear-shaped for the Nigerian since then. He has only made two appearances in the Premier League this season.
Moses could, however, be a useful addition to many teams on the bottom half of the standings.
3. Gary Cahill
Cahill has been a good servant of the club since arriving from Bolton Wanderers in 2012. However, Sarri prefers David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger as his options in central defense. At 33-years-old, Cahill will probably not be able to work his way back into the central defense role on a regular basis.
He could however still benefit a lot of clubs as he is still able to compete at the highest level and has a wealth of experience under his belt.
