Finally, the Portuguese champions were known. It’s Porto FC, as they only needed a win at home against Sporting to guarantee the 2019/20 Portuguese League NOS title. The Dragons beat their rivals 2-0 to lift their 29th Liga NOS trophy.
Porto had a champions stance from minute one and were clearly the best side. The first half counted on two goals that were ruled out though. The first one was for Sporting, on two minutes, through Slovenian striker Andraz Sporar, but he was offside when he got the pass.
Then, a Porto goal was also scrapped out for handball, but thankfully, they made up for it.
The first real goal came only in the second half, on 64 minutes, as Brazilian Alex Telles took a corner on the right, and linked up with captain Danilo, who headed into the back of the net.
It was such a huge blow into Sporting, who seemed to have given up the match. Porto FC were inevitably going to be Portugues Champions as it stood, and it got confirmed on 90+3, as Otavio triggered Moussa Marega, who saw himself one-on-one against the Sporting keeper and sealed it off through a cheeky flick over. What a goal. 2-0 Porto.
What a season for Porto! Led by Portuguese manager, Sergio Conceicao, they have been having such frustrating seasons over the last seasons, but this time, they could overcome Lisbon-based side Benfica to become Portuguese champions.
They reached 79 points in the League and confirmed the title. The second-place stayed with Benfica, who just announced former Flamengo manager Jorge Jesus, who did an amazing job in Brazil as they won the Copa Libertadores and gave Liverpool a hard time in the Club World Cup final.
Congratulations to FC Porto on winning their 29th Portuguese League title!
