Boca Juniors had slight chances of becoming Argentine Champions this Saturday night, hosting Gimnasia y Esgrima in the last matchday of the Superliga. The Xeneizes relied not only on themselves but also on Atletico Tucuman to get at least a draw against River Plate so that the La Bombonera giants could lift the Superliga once again.
And what a perfect script for Russo’s man! Absolutely magnificent. It all started with the local fans giving Boca and Argentine legend Diego Maradona, who commands Gimnasia y Esgrima, a stand ovation.
We can sum up the game in two words. Carlos Tevez. The former Man United and Man City striker had a great performance and scored the winner, and decisive goal to make Boca Juniors win the league in the last matchday.
In the first half, as expected, Boca Juniors dominated the match. On 4 minutes, Sebastian Villa gave it to Tevez, but the Argentine striker squandered it over the post. In the 19th minute, the visitors threatened Boca Juniors’ goalkeeper, Andrada, in a chance with Victor Ayala. However, nothing really happened in the first half.
It was a bad result at half-time for Boca, as they were wasting the chance of overcoming River Plate, as the arch-rival was drawing 1-1 with Atletico Tucuman.
Back from the break, it was Maradona’s men who almost broke the deadlock though. Leandro Contin forced Andrada to make a great save to keep Boca’s clean sheet in the match.
After some attempts from the visitors, Boca Juniors came back to the game and wrapped it up. In the 72nd minute, Ramon Abila assisted Tevez, who rocketed the nets from the edge of the box to give the title for the La Bombonera giants.
At the end of the match, both Gimnasia, at La Bombonera, and River Plate, at Tucuman, were desperately trying to grab a goal, which could culminate in the Argentine Superliga going to the Monumental de Nunez. However, it was meant to be for Miguel Russo’s men, who against all odds, overcame and surpassed all of the difficulties of the season to conquer the hard-fought 34th league title in their history.
Ramon Abila, Salvio, Tevez, Andrada, and, of course, Russo were the main responsible for the Boca Juniors win. However, the Boca fans always play a major role with all their passion. Congratulations and fair play to Boca for the 34th Argentine league title!
