Even though he has been speculated on in other teams in recent weeks, such as English sides Chelsea and Manchester City, Barcelona’s goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen will probably remain in Spain. That’s because, according to the newspaper “Spot”, Barcelona has held talks with the German goalkeeper and they plan on signing a new contract extension.
With this, the goalkeeper may now be linked to the Catalan club until 2025.
During this moment with no football in most parts of the world, much was questioned about Ter Stegen’s future. A few people said that the German keeper would stay in Barcelona, whereas many had affirmed he would leave, possibly to England.
The main reason for his possible departure would be the fact that he no longer felt valued by the club. His salary was also a problem, once he wanted to earn more than he was getting. With that, a few rumors appeared linking the German with other clubs.
However, after some conversation between the two sides, the new contract is much closer to actually happening. Mainly because in the new extension, Barca has a plan to increase his wages. However, the final value will still be lower than what the keeper expected due to the financial crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Honestly, Ter Stegen has great reasons to remain in the Catalan club, once he is an absolute starter in the position. He also brings great confidence to his teammates and increases the quality of the defensive system. Apart from that, he is one of the main pieces of the team.
Since he arrived in Barcelona, back in 2014, the 28-year-old athlete played 224 matches with the club and won 14 titles. Among them, one UEFA Champions League.
