At Villa Park, Tottenham were able to get two comebacks against Aston Villa to leave the pitch with a 3-2 victory in the last minutes. The hosts opened the scoring with an own goal from Toby Alderweireld and later scored with Bjorn Engels. Alderweireld himself and two goals from Heung-Min Son, both at injury time, gave the 3 points to the Spurs.
In an emotional match, the Lions broke the deadlock at the 9th minute. El Ghazi beat Davies and swang a dipping cross into the path of Alderweireld. The number 4, afraid of letting Samatta take the ball, ended up poking it into his own net.
The Belgian defender made up for his mistake at the 27th minute. After a corner, the defender took the ball and smashed it into the net on the turn from a tight angle.
At the end of the first half, VAR intervened to give a penalty to the Spurs, when Engels brought Steven Bergwijn down. The South-Korean Son stepped up, but goalkeeper Pepe Reina was able to make the save. However, at the rebound, the number 7 put the ball into the back of the net, becoming the first Asian to score 50 goals in the Premier League.
Engels then made up for his previous mistake at the beginning of the second half. At the 53rd minute, the number 22 jumped higher than Tottenham’s defense to nod it past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
However, even with the goal, the defender ended up being the guy-to-blame. At 90+4, he couldn’t trap a simple ball forward and accidentally sent Son clean through on goal. The striker dashed into the box and calmly rolled the ball under Reina.
With the victory, the Spurs remain in 5th place, with 40 points, just one behind Chelsea. Aston Villa also remains in 17th place, with 25 points. However, they see both West Ham and Watford, two teams on the relegation zone, just one point behind.
Tottenham comes back to the pitch on Wednesday when they will welcome RB Leipzig for UEFA Champions League. Aston Villa will rest midweek and prepares to face Southampton, away, on Saturday.
