Just eleven days before the first UCL knockout stage match in their history, Atalanta took another step forward by beating Fiorentina 2-1, this Saturday. Federico Chiesa opened the scoring for the home side, in the first half. Duvan Zapata and Ruslan Malinovskyi scored the goals that guaranteed the comeback.
The beginning of the match was exciting. As soon as the 10th minute arrived, the visitors started creating good chances and bringing a lot of trouble to goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski, who had to make great saves to keep the match goalless. Mario Pasalic had the best chance for Atalanta, basically alone, but he wasted it.
However, even though they didn’t have many chances, it was Fiorentina who broke the deadlock. At the 31st minute, Jose Palomino headed the ball, trying to clear a cross, but it went straight to Chiesa’s foot. The number 25 didn’t hesitate and struck a powerful shot home. Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini even touched the ball but couldn’t save it. A beautiful goal to open the scoring.
Atalanta kept on playing better and finally found the back of the net at the beginning of the second half. At the 48th minute, Papu Gomez received the ball inside the box and sent a low cross to the middle of it, where Zapata was waiting to put the ball inside the goal and equalize things.
The comeback came at the 71st minute, with a small help from Dragowskiy. Malinovskyi decided to try on a shot from very long range and Fiorentina’s keeper, who was a little badly positioned, allowed the ball to pass behind his arms and into the net.
With the victory, Atalanta secures their spot on the 4th position, with 42 points. Fiorentina keeps on 14th place, with 25 points. Next weekend, Atalanta will welcome Roma, who is currently in the 5th position and are their main rival for a Champions League’s spot. Fiorentina will face Sampdoria, away, trying to get 3 points and maybe get a few positions.
