Surely, the 2-1 home loss frustrated Ciro Immobile’s team’s Serie A title race hopes, as Juventus have the opportunity to go nine points clear.
The first half already started with a surprise for the Biancoceleste. At the early minute, the Neriverdi almost opened the scoring with Giacomo Raspadori, who put the ball into the back of the net. However, the goal was ruled out after the VAR check.
It was clear that the hosts were having problems playing the way they liked and it took some time until they managed to show what they are capable of. Meanwhile, they were being threatened by the visitors.
Only at the 33rd minute that they were able to break the deadlock. Manuel Lazzari went down the right-wing and found Luis Alberto. The number 10 divided the ball with a defender and put it into the back of the net, with no chances to goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.
The goal didn’t shake the visitors, who kept playing better and creating chances and scaring their opponents’ defense. However, Lazio went to the locker room with a small advantage in the scoring.
In the second half, both managers decided to make a few changes on their teams to go after their goals. And they really helped Sassuolo. As in the first half, the Neriverdi were the brighter side and this time were able to score the equalizer with Raspadori, at the 52nd minute. After a perfect pass from Francesco Caputo, who had just entered, the number 18 just had to put the ball into the back of the net to put the visitors back in the game.
The goal was like a boost to the away side, as they started to get closer and closer to a comeback. More than once, goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha had to make good saves to avoid the goal. As the match approached its end, it seemed that the final result would be a draw, but then, at 90+1, Caputo appeared. After a corner, the number 9 headed the ball into the back of the net to give the three points to the visitors.
