Playing the round of 16 of the French Cup, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Pau FC – a third-tier team that eliminated Bordeaux back in the Round of 32 – by 2-0 and qualified for the next phase of the competition. The goals were scored by Leandro Paredes and Pablo Sarabia.
Even though they were playing away from home and with basically the second team, PSG had no difficulties in the match and controlled the game from minute one. The Parisian side opened the scoring at the 25th minute, with Paredes. Icardi chested a left-sided cross into the path of Paredes, who set himself and fired past goalkeeper Guendouz.
During the second half, PSG kept pressing and kept dominating the match against the third division side. They were able to double the scoring at the 53rd minute when Paredes crossed the ball across goal. Choupo-Moting missed it but Sarabia was in the right place to finish off the attack and kill off the tie.
With 2-0 up, the visitors slowed the pace and allowed Pau FC to create some chances. However, it was not enough and PSG managed to keep the result until the final whistle, leaving the pitch with the qualification.
Paris Saint-Germain will now face Rennes, who eliminated Angers with a 5-4 victory, in the quarter-finals of the French Cup.
Now the team from the capital focus once again on the Ligue 1, the French League, where they are the current leaders. Their next match will be against the fourth place, Montpellier, at Parc of Princes.
Pau FC, who were able to defeat Bourdeaux on an exciting match for the last round of the French Cup, will now focus only on the third division. Their next match will be against Bezier, at home. It is a good chance for them on the fight for the promotion to the second division.
