In a sad decision, the Dutch Football Federation decided, alongside with the Dutch government, to cancel the 2019-20 Football season. With that, there will be no relegated or promoted teams, and no Champions, as both Ajax and AZ Alkmaar were seeking the trophy.
Technically, the season wasn’t declared “null and void”, but it was just canceled with no outcomes, as it would be unfair to relegate teams with some matches yet to be played and both Ajax and AZ were with the same number of points (56) when the season was stopped, with the first ones leading on goal difference.
The decision went out a day after UEFA said that they wouldn’t accept any European leagues to declare the season as “null and void”, as there would have to be European clubs for UEFA competitions.
The difference between canceling the season and declaring it null and void is that when a competition is canceled, all clubs remain in the position they were before the stoppage. In this case, there would be UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League qualified teams, but with no relegation, or champions.
In case of the null and void option, it would be just like the games had never happened, and the country would have no clubs in the next UEFA competitions.
As Ajax was leading the League on goal difference when it was stopped, they will be granted a direct spot in the UEFA Champions League Group Stages next season, as AZ will head to the playoffs.
The decision is sad, but not absurd. In the specific case of the Eredivisie, it’s not really possible to decide the Champions, as both contenders were literally equal on the standings.
At the same time, however, it’s dangerous, as there would have a precedent to do the same with other Leagues in Europe, which have different situations.
It would be ridiculous to do the same with the Premier League, for example, as Liverpool is 25 points clear of the second place, and only needed one win to guarantee the trophy.
However, we’ll need to see the outcome, and also remember that at this moment Football is not that important anymore.
