A thrash, a monologue, a single team in command… This is how we can describe the qualification of Internazionale for the Coppa Italia quarterfinals, after a 4-1 win over Cagliari.
It was easier than most people have imagined, but in the end, the Nerazzurri showed their supremacy through their main man this season: Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker scored twice and led Antonio Conte’s side to the easy win.
The first half was all about Internazionale. At the 23rd second, in an unfortunate move, Oliva tried a backward pass for goalkeeper Olsen but ended up giving Lukaku a true present as the Belgian opened the scoring.
Of course, it wasn’t on Cagliari’s plans to concede under the first minute and it surely affected them for the rest of the match. As for Inter, they kept on pressing for more, and it came once again through Lukaku, with 12 on the clock, but this time, the Belgian was offside.
On the 22nd though, they doubled the scoring with Borja Valero. The Spaniard ghosted in the back post and converted from close range.
Things didn’t change much during the second half. Just 4 minutes into it and Internazionale were already 3-0 up. Lukaku was the one that scored again with a powerful header.
Oliva redeemed himself for his early mistake by scoring the consolation goal at the 72nd minute. But Andrea Ranocchia wrapped it up for Conte’s men, with a header at the far post after a corner. Cagliari still tried to push for something else, but there was not enough time for that.
It was a comfortable victory for Inter, who got the qualification for the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup, and their next opponents will be Fiorentina.
Their next match will be for the Italian Serie A, against Lecce, away. The Nerazzurri side can’t afford another slip as they did in the last Matchweek in the draw against Atalanta that cost them the Serie A top in the title race against Juventus.
Cagliari, who are doing a good campaign in the league so far, will face Brescia, also away, for the 20th Matchday of Serie A.
