This might be not that good news for Borussia Dortmund fans… Despite all criticism he’s been getting throughout his whole Dortmund career, Borussia Dortmund announced the extension of goalkeeper Roman Burki’s contract until June 30, 2023.
Burki is surely not the worst keeper in the world, it could’ve been worse. However, for a club that aims to win at least the German Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund should be looking for some new names, especially to reinforce the defensive sector.
The Swiss keeper arrived in Dortmund back in 2015 from Bundesliga side Freiburg and has played 206 games for the Black & Yellow team. There were some rumors that Chelsea would be interested in counting on Roman Burki for the next season, and the Blues were willing to pay about 15 million pounds for the Swiss keeper.
It is clear, though, that Chelsea is desperately trying to sign anyone so, it’s not a big deal. Plus 15 million pounds in such inflated market you can’t even sign a lower division goalkeeper in Europe.
Wearing the Borussia Dortmund kit, Burki has won a German Cup and a German Super Cup. This season, he has conceded 36 goals and kept 11 clean sheets. As I said, the numbers are not bad, but when Dortmund needs him, he often fails, as he did against Bayern Munich, the game which decided another Bundesliga fiasco for Dortmund.
According to ESPN, besides signing a new deal with Burki, Dortmund also closed the deal with Birmingham City’s Jude Bellingham. The 16-year old midfielder is considered a huge promise among English scouts, and the player was also coveted by Manchester United.
In the Bellingham deal, Dortmund paid about 20 million pounds.
With the last Bundesliga Matchday on the door, Dortmund doesn’t have anything else to fight for, as they already booked their tickets to the UEFA Champions League, and also guaranteed Bundesliga’s second spot, adding up to 69 points.
