SPAL welcomed Roma for Serie A’s 35th matchday this Wednesday. At the Paolo Mazza Stadium, the hosts, who are already officially relegated, saw the visitors’ great offensive power and suffered an amazing 6-1 trashing. Nikola Kalinic, Carles Perez, Aleksandar Kolarov, Bruno Peres, twice, and Nicolo Zaniolo scored for the capital team. Alberto Cerri scored the consolation for the home side.
As expected, Roma started to take control of the match already in the early minutes of the first half. So, it was not a surprise when, at the 10th minute, they opened the scoring. Croatian Kalinic took advantage of goalkeeper Karlo Letica’s rebound and put it into the back of the net.
Honestly, the home team didn’t feel that early goal and even managed to level things a few minutes later. At the 24th minute, Cerri headed home to grab the equalizer.
After that, SPAL demonstrated that they could give the visitors a hard time, but in the end, they were unable to create another good chance of a goal. Meanwhile, Roma found their second goal on the stroke of the half as Perez’s stunner gave the Giallorossi a 2-1 lead before the half-time.
The second half was marked by the visitors’ offensive dominance. Already at the 47th minute, Kolarov hit from afar and goalkeeper Letica couldn’t save the fierce drive that went in.
Then, Bruno Peres got on the scoresheet twice. First, at the 52nd minute, the Brazilian had two chances to put the ball into the far corner. Later, at the 75th minute, he had time to turn inside the box and slot a class finish into the top-right corner.
The visitors still found the sixth goal, at the 90th minute, with Zaniolo. The midfielder received in the defensive field, won a foot race against Federico Di Francesco, left two markers on the floor, and slammed home into the top-left corner, putting the hosts to bed.
The 6-1 victory was very important to Roma, who are now placed in 5th position, with 61 points, which keep the team’s hopes for a place in next season’s Europa League. On the other hand, the loss didn’t affect SPAL, who were already relegated. The club remains in the last position, with only 19 points.
