With their total focus on winning the Argentine Superliga this weekend, River Plate traveled to Ecuador to face Ecuadorian side Liga de Quito, or simply LDU, this Wednesday. The Argentine giants weren’t taking it too seriously, as not even their manager, Marcelo Gallardo went to the sidelines. LDU had nothing with that and capitalized on that to inflict a 3-0 defeat to the Copa Libertadores runners-up.
The visitors respected the Ecuadorian side too much and ended up punished by that. On 14 minutes, LDU had their first good chance, as Ferrera struck the crossbar in a powerful finish.
The crossbar couldn’t save River Plate in the next move though. After a corner kick from Sornoza, Guerra climbed higher than the Argentine rivals and sent straight to the bottom of the goal. 1-0 LDU.
Even losing 1-0 down, the Argentines remained closed down, waiting for a counterattack to level the game. However, the situation only got worse. In the 36th minute, Ayala crossed it to Borja who made it two. 2-0 LDU.
Back from the break, River Plate reserves realized the disadvantage was enormous and went on in search of a goal. In the 48th min, Carrascal tried to score but was denied by Gabbarini.
Despite the attempts, the visiting team was unable to reverse the result. Liga de Quito killed the game with the third goal, on 64 minutes, from the penalty spot. Sornoza took it and converted. 3-0.
With the results, LDU takes the top spot of the Group of death and is followed by Deportivo Binacional, Sao Paulo and River Plate. The second round takes place next week.
In this way, the Argentine team will host Binacional on Wednesday as Sao Paulo welcomes LDU at the Morumbi Stadium.
