River Plate keeps on its journey towards the title of the Argentine Superliga! This Sunday, in the 20th matchday of the Argentine League, Matias Suarez scored the winner in the skinny 1-0 win from Los Millonarios over Banfield.
With the result, River Plate reached 42 points and now will retain the top of the league independently of what happens in the game between second-placed Boca Juniors and Central Cordoba.
With the support of 72,000 fans at the Monumental de Nunez Stadium, River Plate had all the pressure on their shoulders to win the match. Marcelo Gallardo’s men went on using the flanks to build in their dangerous moves and grabbed the opener on 17 mins. Montiel got the ball down the left and crossed it to Suarez, who didn’t even have to jump to swing the nets.1-0 River.
River Plate had the chance to make it two on 29 minutes through Borre from the penalty spot. However, the Colombian striker smashed the crossbar.
Even with the advantage River kept on seeking to augment their lead. Banfield’s keeper, Arboleda, was on a very good day, as he’s been saving the team on Borre, Suarez, and substitute Lucas Pratto’s finishes into the second half.
Indeed, if it wasn’t for the inspired goalkeeper, River Plate should have won for an elastic scoring. But in the end, the missed chances weren’t punished and the hosts guaranteed the three points at home.
After the final whistle, a lot of celebration and a tremendous ovation for Gallardo, who is looking for the only title he hasn’t won ahead of River Plate: The Argentine Superliga.
Next Sunday, River Plate will go to La Plata to face Estudiantes. Banfield will play on Friday, as they will host Aldosivi.
