Who would have thought that the last UEFA Champions League’s finalist, the Reds from Liverpool, the team the enchanted the whole world with a powerful offensive trio, a lethal counter-attack, and a solid defense, mainly after the Virgil van Dijk arrival, would be defeat by the mere Red Star Belgrade?
A small team, who’s got no hist… Wait. What!? Have Red Star Belgrade already conquered the UCL!?? What the!??
Yeah, guys! That’s true! Red Star Belgrade bagged the European Cup on the 29th of May 1991. It’s unbelievable, I know. But if I told you 15 years ago that in the future, we would be able to purchase things using a simple watch, you would not believe me either.
Red Star Belgrade is the only club from Eastern Europe to achieve the maximum glory within Europe. On that day, they played against the French side, Olympique Marseille at the Stadio San Nicola, and won by 5-3 on the Penalty shootouts, as they ended up the regular time goalless.
And not only did they win this one, but they also made it to the semifinal in 1992, when they were defeated by Italian side Sampdoria, who consequently lost the final to Barcelona.
Wow… Even Red Star Belgrade have lifted the European Cup, while PSG, City, Arsenal, and many others have never done so. Even Sampdoria somehow managed to make it to the final, and these clubs haven’t. That’s comic.
Anyways… Let’s talk about Liverpool now. If I were Jurgen Klopp, I would forbid Liverpool to play without their legendary Red kit on European fixtures, mainly away. Last season, they were unbeaten in Europe until the second leg of the semifinal against Roma. They played in white, and lost 4-2, almost conceding a late goal, which would mean they would need to play 30 minutes more, and a possible Penalty shootout.
This season playing European Football, they beat PSG at Anfield in Red, lost to Napoli in Italy wearing Orange, beat Red Star at home in Red, and lost to the same Serbian club away, playing in Purple. Klopp, stop it! Play in Red!
Okay, against Red Star away, it would be impossible to play in Red, as the name of the Serbian club is self-explained. However… Against Napoli, you should have played in Red.
Anyways. Liverpool is still on the way to the Round of 16. Its next game will be against PSG in France. So… Here are the possible scenarios for the Reds:
In case of a victory in France – They make it to the Round of 16
In case of a draw – They need to beat Napoli at Anfield
In case of a defeat – They need to beat Napoli at Anfield for 2 or more goals.
That’s it Liverpool gotta beat Paris Saint-German away in order to move on. However… Who watch Liverpool, knows that they always do it in the hard way. So probably Liverpool will need to beat Napoli at Anfield for 2 goals or more.
Let’s see what’s gonna happen in this interesting Group C!
See ya!
