Portugal tried very hard. But they couldn’t get more than a point against the Serbs. They pushed hard to beat Serbia, but with the Cristiano Ronaldo injury by the 30th minute, things just got tougher for the Portuguese. The match at the Estadio da Luz, in Lisbon, ended up 1-1, as the Portuguese players complained a lot about the referee decisions, especially in a penalty that the referee turned back after signaling the Serbian player’s hand touch.
The Serbs opened the scoring at the beginning of the game. Goalkeeper Rui Patricio fouled Gacinovic, as the referee pointed to the Penalty Spot. Tadic stepped up and converted the pen to the Serbs with 6 minutes on the clock. Playing at home, and having started the Qualifying for the Euro 2020 with a draw against Ukraine, Portugal needed to bounce back, and despite losing the main star – or as many like to refer to as the Goat – Cristiano Ronaldo due to an injury, they somehow found forces to equalize the match. Danilo Pereira struck a beautiful finish from long range, making the Estadio da Luz pulse. 1-1.
In the second half, the scenario was similar and as intense as in the first half. Portugal pushed for a goal, as Serbia tried to come out on counter-attacks. At the 75th minute of the second stage, the referee saw a Rukavina’s handball inside the area. After talking to the assistant, and with the Serbian defender swearing that the ball would have hit the face, the referee turned back, annoying and frustrating the Portuguese players and supporters.
The match ended up 1-1, and despite Portugal is now in a difficult situation in Group B. What concerns the most is whether the Cristiano Ronaldo injury was serious or not. And by concern, I surely mean Juventus fans also. It’s very common for big clubs to “lend” their players to their respective nations, and the same return with a surprise. This surprise is called injuries. Which can be translated into months far from the pitch. It’s been a long time since the big European clubs complain about International breaks. Let’s hope the injury wasn’t a big deal for the Portuguese goat.
With the 1-1 draw, Portugal is with 2 points in two games. Serbia, which debuted today, reached the first point. In the other game, Ukraine, with a late goal, beat Luxembourg and took the lead with four points of Group B.
