This Sunday, Portimonense welcomed CD Aves for the last matchday of the Liga NOS. At the Estadio Municipal Portimao, the Marafados claimed all three points after a 2-0 win but weren’t able to avoid relegation. Willian Rocha and Dener guarantee the victory to the hosts.
The first half had a lot of tension, especially to the home side. They started putting pressure on their opponents since the early minutes but were not being able to transform that in real chances of scoring. Their best opportunity came at the 16th minute when Dener headed to the goal and the ball hit the right post. On the other hand, the visitors basically didn’t create, not even threatening goalkeeper Ricardo Ferreira.
The match was more exciting during the second half, with both sides trying to break the deadlock through crossings and shots from outside the box. The first foal finally came at the 62nd minute. Bruno Tabata whipped a corner into the box and defender Willian Rocha hit a strong header into the back of the net, with no chances to goalkeeper Dimitar Sheytanov, giving his team a small hope of avoiding relegation.
After opening the scoring, Portimonense kept on attacking, trying to guarantee the three points. The team lost a few chances, but in the end, were able to double their lead at the 88th minute. Lucas Fernandes found Dener and the captain headed into the back of the net and confirmed the 2-0 win for the hosts.
Even with the positive result, the Marafados were not able to avoid relegation, as Vitoria FC won their match against Belenenses by 2-0 and got the three points. So, Portimonense finished the season in 17th place, with 34 points, just one behind Vitoria. Meanwhile, CD Aves will also play the second division next season, as they finished in 18th place, with just 17 points.
