Everton completed 90 minutes against Liverpool on Sunday in the Merseyside derby with the scores tied at 0-0. The Toffees were on the verge of claiming a creditable draw against one of the top contenders to win the Premier League this season.
It was also arguably their best performance at Anfield since they last beat the Reds at the ground in 2001. However, it was not meant to be. Divock Origi who barely plays for Liverpool these days netted a dramatic winner for Jurgen Klopp’s team during the 96th minute. It looked as though the biggest winners of the Merseyside derby would be table-toppers with Manchester City but the result ensures that Liverpool remains just two points adrift of the Citizens.
Jordan Pickford committed an error as he turned a miscued Virgil van Dijk volley back into a goal play via his crossbar and into the path of Origi who made no mistake in tapping home.
As Liverpool began to celebrate their win, manager Klopp ran onto the pitch and embraced his goalkeeper Alisson. Klopp was delighted with Alisson as it was the Brazilians free-kick to Trent Alexander-Arnold which ended up creating the winning goal. Alisson was dazed at the moment but he was not the only dazed keeper on the court. After the error, Pickford stood on the field with his hands on hips in front of the Kop.
After the game, he said: “Immediately after the game I apologized to Marco Silva when we spoke to each other”
Pickford committed an embarrassing error but the mishap was not a representation of his performance on the day. The England first-choice keeper as well as his team-mates were brilliant on the day and put in a good save to deny Xherdan Shaqiri’s possible goal.
The Toffees started the game well and should have taken the lead early on through Andre Gomes but he instead put the ball straight to Alisson. The tastes of Richarlison, Bernard and Theo Walcott also caused problems for the Liverpool defense.
Toffees fans will naturally be frustrated by what happened but there are a lot of positives that they can take from the game. They also fully deserved to add a point to the table.
