Out of the title race, Milan plays the Italian Championship with one goal: to ensure their return to the UEFA Champions League after five years away from Europe’s most important club competition. And Saturday’s victory was crucial since they were playing with one of their direct opponents – Atalanta – who could pass Milan on the table in case of victory. And this did not happen thanks to the new reinforcement of the team: the Polish Krzysztof Piatek.
Not that Atalanta made a great first half, but at least looked for the attack and managed to neutralize Milan until reaching the goal in the 32nd minute: Ilicic made a good move on the right and rolled to Freuler to beat Donnarumma with a first-kick. But the home side stopped there and suffered an unfair and not expected goal in the last minutes of the first half: with great talent and a hard kick, Piatek turned an unassuming cross from the left into the equalizer. In the second half, Milan showed who was the best: the Turkish Çalhanoglu got the 2-1 with a nice kick from outside the area, and at 60th, after a corner, Piatek closed the scoring going up in the middle of the rival defenders and giving a header to the goal.
Hired in January of this year from Genoa, the 23-year-old Polish striker was again the highlight of the red-black team. With two goals, he led the team to a comeback and consequently a 3-1 win over Atalanta away from home for the 24th round of the Italian Championship. The number 19 already has six goals in five matches for the new club. Adding the goals for Genoa in the first round, Piatek reached 17 in Serie A, isolating himself as the second top scorer in the Championship and only two goals away from Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo. Do you think he will fight with CR7 for the place as the Top Scorer on Serie A?
