Last Friday Freiburg welcomed Borussia Monchengladbach for matchday 30 of the Bundesliga. The hosts found the victory with a single goal from Nils Petersen and ended up leaving the pitch with the three points.
What we saw in the first half was a dominant Gladbach, searching for control of the game. The good chances came easily for them and already at the 15th minute, goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow was forced to make two great saves to keep the scoreboard goalless.
Ten minutes later, the Foals found the back of the net when Patrick Herrmann finished for the goal, however, Florian Neuhaus touched the ball before it crossed the line, and he was in an offside position. In the end, the goal was ruled out.
Before the end of the first half, Gladbach still missed other good chances of scoring, on the other hand, Freiburg had a lot of problems creating. Their first good chance was during the injury time, but the ball stopped in the good goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
As the second half started, we all thought that it would happen the same as in the first. However, manager Christian Streich saw that his team was not playing well and decided to make two changes. So, at the 57th minute, Roland Sallai gave place to Petersen. And he had an immediate impact.
2 minutes later, the German striker hit a beautiful header to the back of the net, after a free-kick, finally breaking the deadlock and putting the hosts ahead on the scoring.
The visitors felt that goal and things just got worse when they lost Alassane Plea, who saw a second yellow card and was sent off. With one less player on the field, Gladbach tried to put pressure once again, but without effect. The scoreboard didn’t change.
With the victory, Freiburg remains on the fight for a place in the next Europa League, being now in 8th place with 41 points. Borussia Monchengladbach, on the other hand, remain in 4th position due to Leverkusen’s defeat, once both teams have the same 56 points.
