This Saturday, Hellas Verona welcomed Juventus on matchday 23 of the Serie A, at Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium. And we had a pleasant surprise. Even with another goal from Cristiano Ronaldo, who broke Juve’s record of games scoring in a row, it was the home team who got the victory by 2-1. Fabio Borini and Giampaolo Pazzini were the ones that helped Hellas get the comeback.
Far From what everybody expected, the Gialloblu started better, occupying the attacking field and getting near Juve’s area. They had good chances and gave goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny some trouble during the first minutes. The Old Lady just got their first chance in the 18th minute, hitting the post.
With so much power in the attack, it was obvious that Verona was near to scoring a goal, and they actually did at the 20th minute. However, after reviewing the VAR, the goal was ruled out due to an offside position from Kumbulla. However, even with the chances, both teams went to the half time with no goals.
The second half started basically like the first, with the home side having the first chance. However, at the 65th minute, CR7 appeared to finally break the deadlock and put Juventus ahead. Ronaldo and Bentancur played a one-two and then the Portuguese finished at the far post to put his name on the history of the club from Turin. It’s the 10th match in a row where he scores.
Even with the goal, Hellas didn’t give up. They kept on attacking and creating opportunities. With that, at the 76th minute, they equalized the match. After a defensive ado between Pjanic and Bentancur, the ball went to Borini, who sent it into the back of the net.
The winning goal came in the 86th minute when Verona were awarded a penalty after a handball from Bonucci. It was Pazzini who stepped up and secured his team’s victory by 2-1.
Even with the loss, Juventus is still leading the League, but they can lose the top spot to Inter if they win the Milan derby. Hellas, on the other hand, reach the 6th position but can go down depending on the other results of Sunday.
