On Wednesday, playing at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, Napoli visited and beat hosts Inter 1-0 through a Fabian Ruiz goal. Both sides faced each other for the 1st game of the Coppa Italia semifinals.
So, after the great result achieved in Milan, Napoli will play alongside their fans at the beginning of March to try to maintain their advantage and secure their place in the grand final of the tournament.
The opening minutes were of little emotion. Both teams attacked, however, they were unable to reach the opponent’s area with danger. The first good opportunity came from a free-kick from Cristiano Biraghi, who ended up passing the right of the goal. Napoli tried with Polish Piotr Zielinski twice, but he stopped at goalkeeper Daniele Padelli.
After the break, Inter initiated better and threatened through Belgian Romelu Lukaku in a header. However, it was easy for Colombian David Ospina to save it. The hosts abused from the long-balls and lacked creativity throughout the whole match.
The deadlock was broken on 57 minutes, as Spaniard Ruiz rounded two defenders and struck a finish from outside the area straight to the back of the net. Out of reach for the good keeper Padelli. 0-1 Napoli.
Inter tried to grab at least an equalizer, but Napoli held on and guaranteed a minimal – yet important – advantage for the second leg in Naples.
Gennaro Gattuso’s men can play up for a draw next March 5 at the San Paolo Stadium and they will go through the Italian Cup final.
The team’s next appointment will be for the Italian Serie A, against Cagliari, on Sunday. Inter will enter the field also on Sunday against Lazio, in a direct confrontation by the top of the Italian league table.
