Manchester United intended to extend Nemanja Matic’s contract and confirmed that they will do it triggering a clause in his contract to make him stay for another year. His current contract expires at the end of this season.
However, according to the newspaper “The Sun”, Matic is not happy with the conditions. They said he demanded a salary increase from 120 to 140 thousand pounds a week. In addition to that, he wanted another two years, which would make his stay remain until June 2023. Yet according to the reports coming from the newspaper, the last requirement, though, was not accepted by the English Club. One of the main reasons is Matic’s age, once he is already 31 years old.
After playing for Chelsea and Benfica, Matic landed in the city of Manchester in July 2017.
He is part of the Man United revolution, along with Bruno Fernandes and Fred. Together, they gave dynamic to the team and more possibilities to reach the attack and create something. However, the Serbian just scored 1 goal this season and gave 3 assists.
Even with the not-so-good stats, he is an important part of Manchester United’s engine and may be useful in the next clashes for the Premier League, where they are still fighting for a place in next season’s Champions League, and also for the Europa League. The Red Devils are basically already in the quarter-finals after the amazing 5-0 victory against Lask, in Austria. Winning the competition is possible for them.
Matic may not be a key player, but he is important. And playing until the age of 33 is not impossible. Many players are doing it now. United should think about whether the Serbian is worth it or not, as well as if they will be able to find somebody to do what he does in the team. Depending on the answers, they can choose what they think is better for the club.
