Lyon is qualified for the quarter-finals of the French Cup. This Thursday, after a difficult match, the Gones beat Nice by 2-1, away from home, and advanced in the competition.
Moussa Dembele and Houssem Aouar scored for the visitors. Adam Ounas scored the only goal of the home side at the Allianz Riviera Stadium.
The visitors were the ones the open the scoring at the 15th minute. After a cross from Maxwel Cornet, Dembele took advantage of a mistake from the rival’s defense to control the ball and sent it to the back of the net, past the goalkeeper Walter Benitez.
The second half was pretty equal, with both teams trying to find the goal, but it took a long time for it to happen. At the 89th, Nice was finally able to draw the match.
Defender Dante gave a beautiful assist to Ounar, who controlled the ball and hit a beautiful shot past goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.
With 4 minutes of injury time, nobody really thought any of the sides would score. However, the Brazilian defender who was being one of the heroes of the home team after the assist became the villain before the end of the match.
At the 90+3, Lyon were awarded a penalty after Dante brought Ekambi down and Aouar, who had just been introduced into the game, stepped up and converted from the spot.
The difficult victory qualified the Gones for the quarter-finals of the French Cup, where they will face Marseille, on February 12, at home.
For their next match, they will face once again Nice, this time for the French Ligue 1, on Sunday.
Lyon is the 5th on the table, with 31 points, and depending on the results could grab the fourth place from Montpellier. OGC Nice is the 12th, with 29 points. A victory, depending on the other results, could give them a few positions on the table.
