Tottenham’s match for the 4th round of the FA Cup was totally Mourinho style: a lot of suffering, but with the qualification in the end. After drawing on the first leg, making it necessary a second game, the Spurs had trouble to beat Southampton 3-2 in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Wednesday. Jack Stephens, with an own goal, Lucas Moura, and Heung-Min Son scored for the home side. Shane Long and Danny Ings scored for the visitors.
The team from London didn’t play well, as normal during this season, and just got their first goal because of a mistake from the Saints’ defense. Stephens had some real problems doing his job and, after Ndombele’s weak shot, the ball deflected off him and went into the net.
After that, Southampton kept on being the better side and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris gave the opportunity to equalize the scoring with his poor handling. At the 34th minute, Redmond twisted in the area and shot low, Lorris then pushed the ball out to Long, who sent it to the back of the net.
The second half started busy, both teams were now creating chances to stay ahead on the scoring. However, the Saints seemed closer to find the goal and got it at the 72nd minute, through Ings. Former Liverpool player likes to score against the big teams.
It took 6 minutes for the Spurs to react, with the creativity of Brazilian Lucas Moura. The number 27 danced into space just inside the box and swept a right-footed finish into the bottom-left corner.
At the 86th, the chance to get the victory came to the home side. After a wonderful pass from Dele Alli, Gunn brought Son down and the penalty was awarded by the referee. It was the South-Korean who stepped up and converted from the spot, giving the qualification for the London team.
For the next round of the FA Cup, the Spurs will face Norwich City, at home, on March 3.
