Joachim Low, head coach of the Germany National Team, saw with good eyes the declaration given by Ter Stegen to DAZN and to Goal.com when he affirmed being ready to “give pressure” to Manuel Neuer on their personal fight for the place as the main goalkeeper of the team.
Neuer has been between the first 11 since 2010 and Low explained that he did not see any problems in the declaration given by Ter Stegen and still affirmed that there will be a good fight between the two of them to see who will be the goalkeeper during the matches for the knockout before the Euro 2020.
“I think it is everything okay in what he said. It was not an attack against Manuel Neuer or us. He showed his ambitions and he is absolutely right on doing so, because he because he became an amazing keeper in the last two or three years”, said Low in an interview to DAZN. “We are happy to have two world-class goalkeepers in Germany. I said last year that Neuer is the number 1, also because he is our captain. But this year we have a new restart and Ter Stegen will have his chances on the knockout before the Euro 2020”, he completed.
Since his debut in 2012, Ter Stegen played a total of 21 matches, usually when Neuer was injured or resting. It seems that the keeper of Bayern Munich will keep as number 1 based on his good matches in Russia – even after a terrible moment for Germany – but now it is clear that he will have a “rival”, just waiting to have a chance.
Both keepers are in a great moment, even Neuer have been suffering from injuries during the last years. But certainly, the keeper of Barcelona will have to do more, especially in his chances on the National Team, to show the manager that he is more than qualified to take the place of one of the greatest goalkeepers of the history of German Football.
