On Sunday, at the San Paolo Stadium, Napoli lost to Lecce 3-2 and saw their three-game winning streak interrupted. The clash happened for the matchday 23 of the Italian Serie A. Gianluca Lapadula, twice, and Marco Mancosu scored the goal for the visitors. Milik and Jose Callejon discounted for the home side.
Napoli started the game creating some disturbance to the visitor’s defense and was able to get some good opportunities to score. Within 10 minutes, they had already two chances to open the scoring, but missed. And you know, if you don’t score, your rival does. And that’s exactly what happened.
Lecce knew how to take the opportunity they had, at the 29th minute, and broke the deadlock. After a cross, goalkeeper David Ospina was able to clear the ball, but it went straight to Lapadula’s feet, who just put it into the back of the net. The visitors went to the break ahead.
The hosts got back concentrated and with full power on the attack, so they didn’t take long to level things up. At the 48th minute, Dries Mertens crossed and Polish striker Milik headed into the net and past goalkeeper Mauro Vigorito.
However, the home side stopped there. They weren’t able to create more chances and the defensive system was a mess. Because of that, Lapadula was able to score again. At the 61st, from a delivery into the box, the Italian headed in the corner of Ospina, out of reach for the Colombian keeper.
Later, at the 82nd minute, Mancosu hit the top corner in a beautiful free-kick and put the third goal of the visitors on the scoring.
Napoli had to throw themselves at Lecce and managed to at least pull a goal back. At injury time, Callejon put the ball into the back of the net when Lecce’s defense wasn’t able to clear a ball into the box.
With the result, Gennaro Gattuso’s men remain in 11th place, with 30 points. On the other hand, the Salentians remain in 17th place, with 22 points, 3 points away from the first team in the relegation zone.
The Blues come back to the pitch in the middle of the week, for the semifinals of the Coppa Italia, in which they will travel to Milan to face Internazionale. Lecce will rest the week and welcome SPAL on Saturday, for matchday 24 of Serie A.
