In matchweek 18 in the Argentine Superliga, Lanus welcomed Godoy Cruz at Ciudad de Lanús Stadium. With goals from Damian Moreno and Jose Sand, the home team won 2-0 and moved up to 3rd place in the table.

Lanus live a magic moment in the season. On the other hand, Godoy Cruz owns the league’s rock bottom, with only nine points conquered.

Despite the huge difference between both sides – technically and realistically-, the match started surprisingly even. It was Lanus who had the first chance, on wight minutes, through Carlos Auzqui. He received the ball from Sand in the final third and finished from the edge of the box. The ball went wide though.

Godoy Cruz then started commanding the offensive actions in the game and should have scored through a powerful shot from Fabian Henriquez, but his effort was saved buy Lanus keeper.

Unlike the first half, the second one was busier and ended up with a happy ending from hosts Lanus. They broke the deadlock on 60 minutes, as Moreno received from Lautaro Acosta and slotted home from outside the box into the left corner, out of reach for Godoy’s keeper. 1-0 Lanus.

Shortly after, one became two. Godoy Cruz’s Marcelo Herrera brought Auzqui down inside the box, awarding Lanus a chance to score through a pen. Sand was the taker and converted from the spot through a right-footed effort into the top left corner. 2-0 Lanus with 80 mins on the clock.

It was a great result for hosts Lanus, who can be considered as true contenders for the league’s title. They could even temporarily surpass River Plate in the table and become leaders next week, but they will need to beat Argentinos Juniors and cheer for a River Plate defeat to Union Santa Fe.

On the other hand, Godoy Cruz keeps on at the bottom of the table and will try to add some more points next week, on Monday, against Huracan.
