“Every four years it’s the same thing,” some say, “I don’t know what they qualify for if they won’t do anything,” others say, “Mexico won’t make it past the fifth game,” say others as well. And yes, that’s what you hear and read both in the audience and in the media every time it’s time to play a world cup for the Mexican national team.
There has been everything from anger, discord, sadness and tears in previous World Cups, from coaches with almost condemned decisions and extremely rare appearances to a generation that looks like a dream, and is that Mexican national team had never given so much to its fans in the maximum tournament of selections like in Russia 2018. It wasn’t just the 1-0 win against Germany, it was more than that, it went beyond that, it crossed a sentimental line: It was the first time in history that Germany was beaten by Mexico!
It doesn’t matter if it was only in the first match, it doesn’t matter if there is still more way to go, Mexico was victorious over the reigning world champions who, in their first match, were desperate to equalize the score. This has marked Mexican fans forever and it doesn’t seem to matter what comes next, but does Mexico really have all the components to make a difference to their past performances? does beating Germany mean that you can think big? this is something only the results will reflect, however, the Mexican national team’s playing style has not become class “A” even though its results dictate it.
Against South Korea, Mexico did not play at a level where you could put yourself against another “power”. Their game was tactical, yes, but it has not completely convinced. D. T. Juan Carlos Osorio’s strategy since the World Cup qualifiers has been extremely criticized, both by the media in Mexico and by the fans themselves. This has been forgotten so far and many mouths have been shut so far after the team’s victorious performance so far in Russia because it’s working for them.
This, I think, should not make us take our feet off the ground and we should not stop thinking that the game against Germany could be a reference if we talk about level, but it is something else if we talk about strategy. Mexico is not yet reflecting well and has not yet put forward a complete scheme of play for their next matches; it is not known, to begin with, and from Osorio’s strategy, what lineup they will have against Sweden and the style of play on the pitch that Mexico will continue to put forward is still completely unknown. Perhaps it is the reflection of that so criticized-functional rotation that has been made in each and every one of the games that have been played under the command of Juan Carlos, but things are still in the air for the Mexicans in the World Cup.
In Mexico´s group, incredibly, the chances of qualifying are still there for everyone and everything will depend on the final group match. Mexico must secure another victory against Sweden, who will go out and give their all (because they also need the victory) and, in the event of a draw or defeat for the Mexicans, it will depend on whether Germany continues to make history and loses against South Korea. Anything is still possible and Mexico knows it, even though their fans already feel that they won the World Cup from the first game of the group.
Will Mexico be ready to lead the way in the next World Cup?
