The former goalkeeper of the Spanish national team, and current goalkeeper of Porto, Iker Casillas is forwarding his candidacy for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation. The elections still have no date to take place, however, it is certain to happen this year. With the announcement of the candidacy, the goalkeeper is also announcing his retirement from the pitch.
“I have already informed this decision to the club president, from Porto, to whom I can only express my deepest thanks,” explained the goalkeeper about his retirement.
According to a survey conducted by Spanish newspaper Marca, Casillas is the favorite to win amongst Spaniards, who voted between him and the current president, Luis Rubiales. The Real Madrid legend got 94% of approval. Thus, the former goalkeeper showed confidence with the candidacy and optimistic about his election.
“I will present myself as a candidate when the elections are called. Together we will place our Federation at the height of the best football in the world: Spain. We are working with the utmost respect and more than 23,000 voters are waiting for us in a fair and transparent election”, says Casillas.
Unfortunately, the goalkeeper was out of the pitch for a few months due to a heart attack he suffered back in May 2019.
It’s sad that the brilliant goalkeeper is retiring, but at the same time, it’s the best thing to do for him. The 38-year-old legend won every possible title in Europe for club’s football, mainly with Real Madrid. A lot of La Ligas, and some UEFA Champions League for his personal trophy collection. He also won a FIFA World Cup for Spain, back in 2010.
I hope Iker can make an amazing job in case he gets elected, and I truly hope he does. He seems smart enough for the job and also has got the experience.
