This Wednesday, Lyon welcomed Olympique Marseille for the quarterfinals of the French Cup. It seemed that the match would end up in a draw, however, it all changed in the last minutes. Houssem Aouar scored with a little more than 10 minutes left of the game to guarantee the qualification of the home side.
Both clubs were playing a nice game and had basically the same ball possession. And that was basically the first half, all too balanced: number of passes, passing accuracy, and no real chances of goal for none of them. They managed to attack a few times, but not with enough power to break the deadlock.
During the second half, things didn’t really change. It was Lyon who had the perfect chance to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty at the 70th minute, after a foul by Hiroki Sakai. Moussa Dembele stepped up but didn’t convert.
It was clear that Marseille were already waiting for the penalty shootouts, and they seemed prepared for that. And maybe that was their mistake. At the 81st minute, the home side was finally able to score through Aouar and end the suffering from their fans. All the Gones had to do was controlling the match until the end and guaranteeing the small victory by 1-0.
With that, Lyon qualified for the semifinals of the competition, in which they will play against the top team of France, Paris Saint-Germain. It will be a difficult match, but it is not impossible for the Gones to get a victory and go the final.
Both teams now focus once again in Ligue 1, in which they live different moments. Lyon, the 9th place on the table, will welcome Strasbourg on Sunday. Marseille, the second place, will travel to face Lille, on the same day.
