This Saturday, Borussia Dortmund hosted Union Berlin and thrashed the team from the capital for the 20th matchday of the Bundesliga. For the first time, Haaland played as a starter and scored twice in the 5-0 win.
In addition, although Julian Brandt did not score goals, the young man also shone and gave two beautiful assists. Now, the Yellow and Black team reached the 3rd position in the table, with 39 points.
Finally, BVB’s manager Lucien Favre used his brain and started with Haaland among the starters. The hosts opened the scoring on 13 minutes. Raphael Guerreiro got the ball at the edge of the area and passed it to Jadon Sancho, who unmarked, opened the scoring for the hosts.
Then, on 18 minutes, Brandt received down the right and whipped an incredible delivery for Haaland to score and double the lead of Borussia Dortmund.
The Berliners returned to the second half ready to seek a reaction. They pressed a lot, and although Dortmund’s attack has been powerful over the last few matches – mainly after bringing in Haaland -, their defensive sector is still let’s say… Not reliable. To say the least.
Favre had to introduce Dan-Axel Zagadou for Achraf Hakimi to give a little bit more consistency to the defense, and it surprisingly worked.
Dortmund could retake control of the game, and on 68 mins, Haaland was brought down inside of the area by Union Berlin keeper as the ref awarded Dortmund a penalty, which was converted by captain Marco Reus.
A few minutes later, Sancho capitalized on a counter-attack and assisted Witzel to score the fourth goal. Then, the 5-0 was completed on 76′, as Brandt got the playmaker role and assisted the goal-machine, aka Haaland, who scored his 7th goal for Dortmund.
Following the 5-0 past Union Berlin, the Yellow and Black side moved up to the 3rd position in the table and are only three points behind leaders Bayern Munich. In the next matchday, they travel to face Leverkusen, on Saturday.
On the other hand, Union Berlin dropped to 12th place and, in the next matchday, will play against Werder Bremen, also on Saturday.
