The German Football League will propose to clubs to reduce the minimum age to play professionally in the two main divisions of the Bundesliga to 16 years, the German press said on Thursday.
The proposal will be presented to the General Assembly of the 36 professional clubs at its next meeting in March, explained the newspaper Bild.
According to the current regulations, a player can only make his professional debut in German football at the age of 18 or if he is part of the club’s under-19 team, which allowed Turkish Nuri Sahin to set the Bundesliga record of precocity in 2005 when he entered on the pitch for Borussia Dortmund at the age of 16 and 355 days old.
Dortmund supports the project, which would allow the club to promote the debut in the first team next season of the young promise Youssoufa Moukoko, who has been braking goal records and shining not only in the German’s U-19 (where he already has 22 goals in 14 matches this season) but also in the UEFA Youth League at just 15 years old.
“We are currently at a disadvantage compared to other championships and international competitions, because we cannot integrate young players with exceptional talents into professional teams,” said Borussia Dortmund director of youth categories, Lars Ricken.
“There are several cases of players who did not want to come to play in the Bundesliga because they knew they could play professionally a year earlier in other countries,” added the director.
RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann, the current leader of the German League, defends another point of view: “I am not very much in favor of this proposal. If I bring the players earlier, they will be under pressure and under the media’s focus sooner ”.
“I am not a scientist and I have not studied this deeply, but I find it hard to believe that it is good for development to be a 16-year-old Bundesliga player,” added the 32-year-old.
Certainly, the young players will approve this proposal. And you, what do you think about it? Should a young player be given a chance to debut professionally at the age of 16? Leave a comment below with your thoughts!
