Due to the pandemic of the new Coronavirus, FIFA canceled its awards, ‘The Best’. However, FIFA still wants to reward the Footballers in any other possible way. The information was released on Wednesday by the Spanish newspaper “Marca”.
The event was canceled due to the social distancing measures recommended by the World Health Organization. However, the fact of not having the ceremony does not mean that there will be no award.
The FIFA event honors the best players in women’s and men’s football and also delivers the Puskas Award, the most beautiful goal of the season. There’s also the Team of the year.
The ceremony was scheduled for September 21, 2020.
It is not yet confirmed whether the award will be given, even without the traditional ceremony taking place. However, if FIFA decides not to have the award and leave The Best 2020 open, it will be the first time in almost 30 years of the award’s existence, which began in 1991, when German Lothar Matthaus won.
Whereas, there have been changes since then. In other words, the award for the best in the world lasted until 2009. From that moment, a joint was made with the Golden Ball of the French magazine “France Football”. However, it lasted from 2010 to 2016, when the partnership ended, and both awards split once again.
The biggest winner of all time is the Argentine Lionel Messi, who won six times and is closely followed by Pórtuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, who won in five times. It is interesting to note that since 2008, only three players have won the prize. Other than Ronaldo and Messi, the other one was Croatian Luka Modric, in 2018.
Unfortunately, it has come to this. The draconian measures are ruining Football. Of course, there’s a ‘good’ reason for that, but it’s sad to see Leagues, and awards being canceled like this.
