After almost two months without games, the Bundesliga returned this Saturday with matches behind closed doors. This Sunday, for the continuation of Matchday 26, FC Koln welcomed Mainz at the Rhein Energie Stadium.
The hosts were ahead on the scorer with goals from Mark Uth and Florian Kainz. The visitors then chased the result and were able to end up with a 2-2 draw. Taiwo Awoyini and Pierre Kunde were the ones to score for Mainz.
During the first half, Koln dominated the match. With that, they didn’t take long to break the deadlock. At the 6th minute, Niakhate pushed Uth inside the box and the referee awarded the home side with a penalty. The German striker stepped up and converted from the spot.
Things kept the same until the second half. When the last 45 minutes started, Mainz showed a completely different stance on the pitch. They were trying not to let Koln control the game again. And they were doing a good job, until the 53rd minute, when Kainz’s header went to the back of the net, making it 2-0 for the hosts.
Fighting against relegation, the visitors had to do something, and thankfully, for their fans, they didn’t even take 10 minutes to score their first goal.
At the 61st minute, Baku found Awoniyi, who scored his first goal in Bundesliga. 11 minutes later, Kunde took the ball in the midfield, went forward, and sent it into the back of the net to guarantee at least a point.
With the draw, FC Koln kept in 10th place, with 33 points. Mainz remained in 15th place, with 27 points, just 4 ahead of Dusseldorf, the team who is currently on the relegation play-offs.
Next week, for Matchday 27, both teams will play on Sunday. Koln will welcome Fortuna Dusseldorf, while Mainz will have a difficult match against RB Leipzig at home.
