Copa Libertadores Group A started this Wednesday with Champions Flamengo visiting Colombian side Junior Barranquilla. It was a good performance from Jorge Jesus’ men, who counted on a double from Everton Ribeiro to win it 2-1.
It was a very mature performance from the Copa Libertadores holders. Flamengo knew how to wait for the perfect moment to counterattack and kill the game against a good Junior Barranquilla side.
The hosts started the game on top of the Brazilians, but the visitors managed to score on their first chance. Giorgian de Arrascaeta got the ball down the left and crossed it low to the box. Gabigol smartly let the ball pass through him as it went to Everton Ribeiro, who hit a first-time shot into the back of the net. 0-1 Flamengo.
Junior had a great chance with striker Miguel Borja, who was one on one against Diego Alves, but the Brazilian keeper prevailed over the Colombian.
In the second half, Junior went up in search of a draw and had Teo Gutierrez as their most dangerous man to score, but he stopped at Diego Alves.
The Brazilian side was waiting for that lethal counterattack to wrap it up, and it came on 76 minutes. Gabigol picked out Michael, who sped up and assisted Ribeiro, who was unmarked in the final third and had a subtle touch to score. 0-2 Flamengo.
Junior deservedly grabbed a goal in the injury time, as Teo Gutierrez capitalized on a Daniel Rosero’s pass and stretched himself to beat Alves and score the consolation. 1-2.
With the 2-1 away win, Flamengo is the second-placed in Group A, with the same three points as Copa Sudamericana Champions, Independiente del Valle, with the latter leading on goal difference. Junior Barranquilla and Barcelona de Guayaquil complete the Group.
Flamengo will meet Barcelona at the Maracana Stadium, while Independiente del Valle hosts Junior at Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa. The matches take place simultaneously next Wednesday.
