Following a lot of controversies involving VAR calls in favor of La Liga leaders Real Madrid, some La Liga players and even head coaches have been speaking out on the subject. Recently, Valencia’s Rodrigo Moreno said La Liga VAR is a scandal when it comes to favoring Real Madrid after he had a goal ruled out for offside when he was apparently onside in the clash against the Merengues.
Los Blancos head coach Zinedine Zidane stepped up to defend his club in a press conference. The Frenchman basically said that he was “tired” of hearing that his club only win games due to controversial VAR calls and an extra hand from referees.
The Frenchman went further and even told journalists to show Real Madrid some respect and to highlight their Football is shown inside the pitch and not things that they had no control over.
Even Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone had given his opinion on the whole controversy and said:
“They are referees and make mistakes, but this is normal… Now everyone is talking about Real Madrid, but they have been given more penalties because they attack more”.
Real Madrid won yet another match 1-0 with a goal from the spot. This time, it was La Liga’s 34th Matchweek, against Athletic Bilbao. After a boring first-half, Brazilian left-back Marcelo was brought down inside the box over a ball dispute. At first, the referee didn’t give the penalty, as even Marcelo himself quickly got up and kept on playing.
But then, VAR advised the ref to check the play, and the penalty was given to Real Madrid, and consequently converted from the spot by captain Sergio Ramos.
In fact, referees can make mistakes, and some calls favoring Real Madrid are true scandals, but I think it’s happening all over La Liga when a big side plays against a struggling side.
It’s much more a “don’t hate the player, hate the game” situation than any other kind of conspiracy theories.
I think Barcelona is better than Real Madrid, as Zinedine Zidane’s men have been relying on a center-back to score winners, which won’t happen all games.
