This Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium, we got to know the first qualified side to the Quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup. It was between Manchester City and Southampton, as the Cityzens beat the Saints 3-1 and advanced. Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero, twice, scored City’s goals, while Stephens pulled a goal back to the visitors.
On the last Matchday in the Premier League, Southampton was humiliated by Leicester at home, and expectations were high among Man City fans to see if they could make poor Saints suffer once again. And with 20 mins on the clock, Otamendi opened the scoring in a beautiful header from a Bernardo Silva cross.
Yet in the first half, Manchester City took advantage of the defensive fragility of the Saints and doubled their lead. At the 38-minute mark, Kyle Walker went deep into the middle and crossed it to Aguero, who showed a lot of class to just tap into the net. 2-0 Man City.
At half-time, we couldn’t really see at least some hope on Southampton, as their players seemed to have completely lost the bit of confidence they had. After the break, City kept commanding the game, had some chances, but only scored once, through Aguero, on 79 mins. Riyad Mahrez got the ball and shot from outside of the box, as it went to the path of Aguero, who controlled the ball and made it three.
Although totally beaten and delivered in the match, Southampton still managed to score their goal of honor at the Etihad Stadium. Towards the end of the game, the Saints diminished with Stephens’ header, as he took advantage of Ward-Prowse’s corner. 3-1.
Following Man City’s win, they are through the quarterfinals. The draw will take place on this Friday, as they still wait for other matches to be finished.
