Atletico Madrid welcomed Alaves for matchday 32 of La Liga this Saturday. At the Metropolitano stadium, the hosts were able to get a 2-1 victory, which was built in the second half. Saul Niguez and Diego Costa scored for the home side, while Joselu, already in the injury time, scored for the visitors.
The first half started with the away side having the first opportunity already in the early minutes with a free-kick. However, it didn’t take long until Atleti took control of the match and started putting pressure on their opponents. The Colchoneros started to create good chances and maybe they could have opened the scoring if it wasn’t for the bad aiming of their players. So, even with the opportunities, they went to the locker room goalless.
In the second half, the goals finally came. Already at the 59th minute, the hosts broke the deadlock. After a cross from Kieran Trippier, Saul Niguez appeared in the middle of the box to head the ball into the back of the net, putting Atleti ahead on the scoring.
After suffering the goal, Alaves started to attack once again but lost the chances they were able to create. Meanwhile, the hosts didn’t stop their advances and kept searching for the second goal. And it came at the 73rd minute when they were awarded a penalty after Marcos Llorente was brought down inside the box. Striker Diego Costa stepped up and converted from the spot to double their lead.
The visitors felt the second goal but didn’t give up. And they even managed to score, in the injury time, but it was already too late. At 90+3, they were awarded a penalty due to a handball. Joselu stepped up and converted from the spot. With that, the scoring ended 2-1 for the Colchoneros.
With the victory, Atletico Madrid reached 58 points but remained in 3rd place. Alaves, on the other hand, stopped at 35 points, in 16th place.
