This Saturday, Sheffield United welcomed Chelsea for matchday 35 of the Premier League. At the Bramall Lane, the hosts played very well and left with a surprising 3-0 victory over their opponents. Two goals of David McGoldrick and one of Oli McBurnie guarantee the three points to Sheffield.
If we had to choose a word to describe Chelsea’s first half, it would be neutralized. The home team made the game very difficult to the Blues during the first 45 minutes and it was able to see how they were being able to play exactly the way they liked. Chelsea were facing one of the best defenses in the Premier League, and it showed.
However, the surprise was when, at the 18th minute, Sheffield broke the deadlock. Mason Mount lost the ball on the edge of his own box and gave the hosts the chance to create a good opportunity. George Baldock crossed the ball into the box and McBurnie sent a half-volley which goalkeeper Kepa was able to make a difficult save. However, in the rebound, McGoldrick put the ball into the back of the net to open the scoring.
The early goal gave more energy to the hosts, who continued being the better team and stopped any attempts from the Blues. Still, in the first half, they were able to double their lead. At the 33rd minute, Enda Stevens went down the left-wing and crossed into the box. Chelsea’s defense seemed completely lost and McBurnie jumped alone to head the ball into the back of the net.
Losing by two goals, the visitors went back to the second half searching for a way to get back into the game. But it wasn’t their day, maybe. Or maybe it was Sheffield’s day. Because impressively, they scored the third goal at the 77th minute. After a fast counter-attack, Lys Mousset crossed into the box and the Blues’ defense didn’t clear the ball, that was left to McGoldrick, who scored his second goal of the day.
With the 3-0 victory, Sheffield United reached 54 points, in 7th place. Meanwhile, Chelsea stopped at 60 points and may drop to 4th place depending on Leicester’s game.
