On a historic Monday for Cristiano Ronaldo at the Kiev Olympic Stadium, Ukraine hosted Portugal in Group B of the Euro 2020 Qualifiers. It was historic for CR7 as he scored and reached the 700 goals mark in his career. However, the party was all about the Ukraine national team and the over 70,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium. Roman Yaremchuk and Andriy Yarmolenko scored for the hosts, as CR7 did it for Portugal.
With a brilliant performance in the first half, Ukraine closed the deal and guaranteed the qualification. The national team opened the scoring after five minutes. After a corner from Marlos, Kryvtsov headed, Rui Patrício palmed it away, but smart Yaremchuk got the rebound in the six-yard box to tap into the nets. 1-0 Ukraine.
The Ukrainians kept dominating the match, and on 27 mins they doubled their lead. Yarmolenko was fed by Mykolenko and fired home past Patricio. 2-0 Ukraine.
After the break, the hosts slowed down the pace, as the Portuguese men went up to grab at least one.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-awaited goal came after a controversial decision by the referee, who awarded them a penalty and even sent off Stepanenko. Ronaldo stepped up and scored for Portugal. 2-1 with 72 on the clock.
Playing down to 10-man, the Ukrainians knew how to suffer, and counted on with a little bit of luck to hold the Portuguese. The pressure in the final minutes was intense though. The visitors created a lot of chances and even hit the crossbar through Danilo Fernandes. But the game ended up with the Ukrainian triumph.
With the 2-1 win, Ukraine booked their spot into the Euro 2020 and first place in the Group with 19 points. Alongside Ukraine, Belgium, Italy, Russia, and Poland had already secured their places in the Euro, which will have 24 national teams.
Portugal is close behind in Group B with 11 points, followed by Serbia with 10, Luxembourg with 4 and Lithuania with 1. The first two of the Group will head to the Euro.
