Real Madrid had an unfortunate Saturday as nothing seemed to work out. The team had a player sent off and was defeated by Mallorca 1-0 away at the Iberostar Estadio, thus ended up not only losing their unbeaten record in Spanish La Liga but also losing the top to their deadly rivals Barcelona.
Although the defeat looked imminent as Real Madrid hasn’t really been playing good football, they were still the only unbeaten side in the tournament so far. The setback changed that scenario and left Zinedine Zidane’s side in second place with 18 points, one less than new leaders Barcelona, who beat Eibar on Saturday.
Mallorca, meanwhile, celebrated their triumph for their historic importance, as it was the first time the team defeated Real in the decade, and also because the positive result took the team coached by Vicente Moreno out of the relegation zone and led them to 14th place with ten points.
Real Madrid was innocuous and left much room for Mallorca to play early in the match. Aware of the spaces left by the rival, the hosts explored them, especially in midfield, and opened the scoring at the start of the game after seven minutes through Lago Junior. In a beautiful individual play, the Ivorian striker rounded Odriozola and fired past Courtois. 1-0.
The early goal disrupted the strategy of the Madrid team, who remained sleepy and unproductive mainly because Isco and James Rodriguez, as they did little, and Vinicius Junior and Jovic, who failed to complete the plays. Benzema was the only one who could threat. The Frenchman hit the crossbar, but the day wasn’t really for Real Madrid.
Halfway through the second half, Rodrygo was introduced by Zidane. He even played well, and tried to create some good plays, but failed to prevent the team’s first defeat in the domestic league. In the end, right-back Odriozola was sent off by a bad foul in Lago Junior.
Following the 1-0 defeat to Mallorca, Real Madrid doesn’t really have time to regret the setback as it has a major commitment on Tuesday for the UEFA Champions League. The Spanish side needs to beat Galatasaray in Turkey to keep dreaming in the Group Stages, as they have only a point in Group A so far.
