Newcastle hosted Premier League Champions Liverpool on Premier League’s last day of the season. Nearly nothing was at stake, as Reds went on to come back from 1-0 down to claim all three points in a 3-1 win. Virgil van Dijk, Divock Origi, and Sadio Mane scored for the Champs, as Dwight Gayle scored for the Toons.
Jurgen Klopp’s men ended their superb Premier League season on 99 points, setting a new club record for English league points at the end of the season.
With a mixed-up starting team, Liverpool saw themselves 1-0 down from minute one. van Dijk fouled a Newcastle player down the middle, as the Reds’ defense was surprised by a quick set-piece, as the ball went to Dwight Gayle, who controlled the ball, boosted past Neco Williams and drove a finish into Alisson’s corner.
The home team managed to hold the Reds up until the 38th minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain delivered a superb cross from the right to big Virg to redeem himself and slot a header into the corner.
After the break, Liverpool went on to score twice more and finish their golden season in style. Andrew Robertson passed it to Origi, as the Belgian striker managed to fire it home from 20 yards out at the corner to make it two.
Jurgen Klopp opted for resting his powerful front-three at the beginning of the match, but introduced them all at once on 75 mins, as they had time enough to do some more damage to the hosts.
Mane wrapped it up as he was triggered down the left by Brazil international Roberto Firmino, as the Senegal striker got to the box, cut inside, and slotted at the far post. 3-1 Liverpool.
With the win, the Reds finish their season in style, on 99 points and 18 points clear the second-placed, more than any other side in the PL’s history. The Reds also equaled the Man City’s 32 wins in a season all-time record and claimed the record of winning it with seven matches yet to be played, meaning the Reds have been given seven guards of honor until the end of the season.
