After a negative sequence of three consecutive draws, Atletico Madrid found the winning route once again in Spain’s La Liga. Playing at the Wanda Metropolitano, Diego Simeone’s side stepped up and defeated Bilbao 2-0. Saul Niguez and Alvaro Morata scored for the hosts in the 10th Matchday in the Spanish League.
With the result, Atletico Madrid moved up to 2nd place in the standings, counting on 19 points. The Leaders Barcelona also have 19 points, but they top the League on the goal-difference, and also have a game in hand, in ‘El Clasico’ against Real Madrid, which was postponed due to political turmoil in Catalunya.
This Saturday’s game was busy from the beginning. After two minutes, the visitors almost broke the deadlock. After a good corner, Martinez nodded strongly, but Jan Oblak saved the hosts.
Afterward, the home owners had two clear chances, but Koke and Thomas Lemar did not open the scoring. At 27, however, the Madrid team finally scored: Correa found Saul, who controlled the ball and fired. The ball had a deflection midway and tricked the Bilbao keeper. 1-0 Atleti.
In the second half, Atletico took a more defensive stance and Bilbao went on, showing their aggressive football. In a good chance for the visitors, Muniain took advantage of a cross from the left and volleyed it wide. The missed chance was costly.
Then, on the counterattack, Correa gave his second assist of the day. This time, it was Morata who sent it home, on 64 mins into the game. 2-0 Atleti.
After that, Atleti went full Simeone and defended the lead. Oblak was vital though, as the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper made great saves that secured the three points for Atletico.
