Even without relying on the once again injured Neymar, and the Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, Paris Saint-Germain had no trouble running over Club Brugge 5-0 on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League. Playing away in Belgium, PSG counted on three goals from Kylian Mbappe and another two from Mauro Icardi to remain 100% successful in Group A of the European Cup.
Finally, the French side, who spent almost over a billion euros, is beginning to perform as expected. They kicked off the match in Brugge at a strong pace and opened the scoring on 7 minutes. After a Thiago Silva long ball, Angel Di Maria got the ball down the right flank and crossed it to Icardi, who tapped in. 0-1 PSG.
PSG wasted a couple of opportunities in the remaining of the first half, as it ended up just like this.
The show began in the second half, with a French massacre on Belgium soil. Tuchel introduced Mbappe – who was just coming back from injury – into the game and he changed the game. PSG doubled their lead as Simon Mignolet failed to prevent Di Maria’s strike, as the ball went to Mbappe, who had no problems to make it 2-0.
And soon after, on 63 minutes, Mbappe assisted Icardi to score his second goal in the game and open 3-0. The French striker would later swing the net twice more, at a break of only four minutes, as he scored on 79 and 83 mins. The Frenchman received two assists from Di Maria and sealed the 5-0.
By beating Belgian rivals in Bruges, PSG took a huge step forward to secure their place in the Round of 16 of the UCL.
Thomas Tuchel’s team further widened their lead in the Group with nine points, five ahead of Real. Brugge, formerly second, fell down to the third place with two points, and the rock bottom Galatasaray counts on just one point.
